Tar Heels Earn 4th Shutout of Year With Win Against UNC-W

With the win, the Tar Heels improve to 11-5-1 (2-2-1 in the ACC). The Seahawks drop to 6-8-0.

Senior forward David Testo opened the Tar Heel scoring at the 29:07 mark, and North Carolina held the 1-0 lead for the rest of the first half.

Testo tallied his fourth goal of the season as senior Ryan Kneipper crossed the ball to junior forward Sean McGinty, who headed the ball down onto Testo's foot.

Sophomore forward Jonathan Davis put the Tar Heels up 2-0 at the 62:52 mark off a through-ball from Crawford and fired the ball past Seahawk goalkeeper Bill Mills.

Crawford later scored his fifth goal of the season at 86:53 off an assist by sophomore midfielder Tim Merritt.

North Carolina freshman goalkeeper Ford Williams made one save, while Mills had a season-high eight saves on the match.

The Tar Heels head to Clemson on Nov. 3 for an ACC match at 2 p.m.

Keeran Named ACC Player of the Week

With two goals in North Carolina's win against Maryland on Saturday, UNC sophomore forward Kelsey Keeran earned ACC Player of the Week honors for field hockey.

Keeran, a sophomore from Sunbury, Ohio, had the first goal and the game-winner as ninth-ranked UNC defeated the third-ranked Terrapins in College Park, Md.

Keeran's first goal came in the opening period and put North Carolina up 1-0.

Her second, in the 50th minute of play, gave the Tar Heels a 3-1 lead.

After missing the first four games of the season with a broken jaw, Keeran has started the last 13 and now has four goals, two of them game winners.

She also has two assists for a total of 10 points, tied for fourth on the team.

Saturday's performance was Keeran's first two-goal game of the season and the third of her career.

The win gave North Carolina a 3-1 record in conference play and locked up the No. 2 seed in the ACC Tournament, which begins Nov. 7 at Duke.

The Tar Heels close out the regular season this weekend with a pair of games in Norfolk, Va., at Old Dominion on Saturday and against Princeton on Sunday.
