Executive Branch Finalizes New Cabinet Appointments

Sixty-four students applied, about 30 were interviewed, and the new members were notified Friday evening, said Rebekah Burford, chief of staff for the executive branch of student government.

Each of the selected applicants expressed real interest and dedication, Burford said. "They were going above and beyond to make their interest a reality."

Student Body President Jen Daum said that executive branch officials had to choose from an amazing group of applicants but that they chose those who were the most qualified. "We are excited about the new members," she said.

The students were chosen to fill vacancies created by Cabinet members who resigned to participate in the spring student elections.

Applicants were asked a wide range of questions during the interview, and some even caught the applicants off guard.

When asked "If you could be a tree, what kind would you be?" senior Enyonam Kpeglo, who will be the chairwoman for the Minority Affairs Committee, said she would be a dogwood. "They are so resilient, plentiful and multifaceted because they are a flower and a tree. Also, the different colored flowers add diversity."

Sophomore Brian Suh, who was chosen as an executive assistant to the student body president, was asked, "If there was a movie based on your life, what would it be called?"

"I said 'Footloose,' because I couldn't think of an original title and 'Footloose' is a good movie," Suh said.

Only three of the new members were at Sunday's meeting, but each expressed excitement about being chosen.

Kpeglo thought that her affiliation with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People would bring a lot to the table. "My involvement with the NAACP has really opened my eyes to injustices on this campus," she said.

Junior Andrew Landstrom, the new communications director, said it wasn't his background that made him qualified but rather his willingness to take the job seriously. "A lot of times, it's how much time and dedication you are willing to put in."

Senior Stephen Cheng will be chairman of the Student Services Committee, sophomore Elizabeth Reed will head the Human Relations Committee, freshman Tom Lycan will serve as an executive assistant to the student body vice president, sophomore Meghan Gentile will serve as executive assistant to the student body treasurer, and freshman Seke Ballard will serve as assistant to the chief of staff.
