Storey gets 29th goal of storied career

In 1988, North Carolina men's soccer player Donald Cogsville made his mark in the record books by scoring 29 career goals.

Now, 16 years later, senior Marcus Storey has matched this accomplishment with his goal against William & Mary on Wednesday.

Storey is now tied with Cogsville at eighth place on the all-time UNC career goals list.

Even with this success, Storey remained grounded.

"I had read and heard about this, but I try not to worry about it," Storey said. "I am just enjoying my final year. I give credit to all the other players on the team. They are all great to play with."

Storey's goal came in the 26th minute, when he pounded the ball past William & Mary goalkeeper Kris Rake with a bending shot into the upper right corner of the net.

"Before the game, we were talking about how important these last three games were, and I said I wanted to score off a bending shot into the upper right corner," Storey said. "It just worked out. I was glad to get the one-goal lead."

Storey is considered a smart player by his teammates.

"Most players would have tried to dribble the ball in, but Marcus shot the ball from 20 yards out," said sophomore Jamie Watson. "He plays for the team."

Storey has put the finishing touches on numerous crucial goals for the Tar Heels in the past four years. But he has impressed everyone with his incredible speed.

"He is one of the best players in the country," Watson said. "He has got pure speed. You can't teach that.

"He also knows when there are times he needs to use more than that, and he does. He deserves every goal he has gotten."

Storey has improved during his time at UNC and has worked hard to get where he is now.

"In the beginning Marcus was an up-and-down player," said UNC coach Elmar Bolowich. "Now as a senior, he has changed. He tries to lead by example. He is better this year than he has been before."

With the end of Storey's UNC career drawing near, he said he hopes the team can keep its season-long five-game winning streak going as the postseason approaches.

Said Storey, "I want to keep the intensity up and be a leader."
