Warrants issued for three reported sexual assaults

Warrants were issued Monday for a suspect in three sexual assault cases reported in March and April, according to a press release from the Chapel Hill Police Department.

The report states that Donald Ivan McCray is being charged with first degree rape, two counts of first degree sex offense, two counts of first degree kidnapping and assault on a female.

McCray is a 44-year old black male with black hair and brown eyes. He is 6’3” and weighs 230 pounds, according to the report.

When the report was released, McCray’s whereabouts were still unknown.

Budget for fiscal year 2005-06 to be presented tonight

The Orange County Manager’s budget for fiscal year 2005-06 will be presented to the public today.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. in F. Gordon Battle Courtroom in Hillsborough.

Public hearings on the proposed county budget, which currently estimates a 9-cent countywide property tax increase, will be held May 31 and June 1 in Chapel Hill and Hillsborough, respectively.

 

The Orange County Peace Coalition will host event

Those looking for something to do on Memorial Day will have a number of available options.

The Orange County Peace Coalition is sponsoring the Memorial Honoring the Victims of War Monday.

The event will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Town Commons in Carrboro.

University Lake and the Cane Creek Reservoir will also be open for recreational activities from 6:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday.

 

Emergency meeting to focus on nuclear reactor

Chatham County will hold an emergency meeting today in Pittsboro.

The meeting comes after Progress Energy announced its interest in building a second reactor on the Shearon Harris Nuclear Plant south of Jordan Lake.

The meeting will feature Nuclear Safety Engineer David Lochbaum.

The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of Central Carolina Community College at 764 West Street.

 

New historical exhibit will open Friday during festival

A new exhibit for the Orange County Historical Museum will be unveiled Friday.

During the Last Friday arts event in downtown Hillsborough, the museum will reveal the newest part of its permanent “Regulation to Revolution” exhibit.

The Last Friday festival, an event occurring on the last Friday of each month from April to October, will begin at 6 p.m. The event will also feature musical performances by the Mt. Bright Baptist Church Gospel Choir and the Women in the Round ensemble.
