Tar Heels open with 2 victories

TOPEKA, Kan. — North Carolina finished off a perfect 2-0 weekend to start the 2005 women’s soccer season as the No. 1 Tar Heels defeated Colorado, 3-0, at Hummer Sports Park on Sunday afternoon with a crowd of 3,278 in attendance. Senior midfielder Kacey White assisted on a pair of North Carolina goals, and senior goalkeeper Aly Winget went all the way to record a solo shutout while making three saves.

Sophomore forward Jaime Gilbert and junior forward Elizabeth Guess each scored their second goals of the season, and senior midfielder Lori Chalupny added the third and final goal shortly after halftime.

North Carolina improved to 2-0 on the season while No. 22 Colorado fell to 1-1 on the season.

The games this weekend were played in Topeka as a homecoming trip for UNC senior forward Leea Murphy. UNC beat Tennessee, 7-1, Friday at Hummer Sports Park with Murphy tallying one of the goals.

UNC got on the board in the 10th minute of play against the Buffaloes with what proved to be the game’s deciding goal. Gilbert beat two defenders and slotted a shot past CU goalkeeper Jessica Keller to make it 1-0 at 9:17. Gilbert was aided by a double assist, as White and junior striker Heather O’Reilly triggered the play with crisp passes.

North Carolina made it 2-0 in the 30th minute of play on an unassisted goal by Elizabeth Guess, who banged home a rebound from about five yards out for her second goal of the season at 29:29.

It was Chalupny who racked up the game’s third and final goal at 48:13 of the match when she ripped a shot from 20 yards out past Keller on an assist from White.

Field hockey blanks two

IOWA CITY, Iowa — North Carolina picked up its second shutout win in as many games with a 1-0 win over host Iowa Sunday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Grant Field.

UNC’s only goal came from junior midfielder Rachel Dawson on a penalty corner 21 minutes into the game. Sophomore Heather Kendell (pushout) and junior Ashley Judge (stick stop) picked up assists on the play, which put UNC ahead for good.

Senior goalkeeper Katy Tran made three saves, and UNC had 13 shots, eight in the second half, to five by the Hawkeyes. The Tar Heels drew eight penalty corners to four by Iowa.

UNC (2-0) opened the season on Saturday with a 2-0 win against Michigan.

Sophomore Alli Tanner scored both goals as the Tar Heels started the year with a win over the Wolverines for the third season in a row.
