Local political web site celebrates second birthday

Online exclusive

Local political activists will have cause to celebrate tonight.

OrangePolitics.org, a community Web site that provides a space for locals and politicians to meet to discuss Orange County issues, will celebrate its second birthday today.

Ruby Sinreich, editor and founder of the online forum, created the site to allow people to post their concerns about Orange County.

Sinreich said the site is an outlet for those who want to make their opinions known or simply to read the opinions of others in the community.

"It has a progressive political slant, so it is for everyone to debate the issues or find people to discuss the issues with," said Sinreich of the Web site, which stemmed from her personal blog.

Many times, municipal candidates and current Chapel Hill Town Council and Carrboro Board of Aldermen members respond to the posts, creating dialogue between the county leaders and citizens.

Dan Coleman, a columnist for The Chapel Hill Herald, is among the frequent posters on the site. He said he believes Sinreich's political forum benefits the community.

"It gives people the opportunity to see different perspectives," he said.

Recent posts highlight everything from candidates' attempts to campaign online to discussing yard signs and public restrooms.

In the past, the Web site has created a tremendous amount of talk in Orange County by mainstreaming locals' concerns.

Laurin Easthom, a candidate for Chapel Hill Town Council who has posted occasionally since the beginning of OrangePolitics, said she believes the Web site is a timely outreach tool.

"The posts are things that are local and going on right then," she said.

OrangePolitics will celebrate its second anniversary after the Sierra Club forum for Chapel Hill town office candidates tonight at Hell, located at 157 1/2 E. Rosemary St.

Sinreich said the featured drink special will have an OrangePolitics theme.
