Hip-hop can't stop and won't stop. No student organization epitomizes this ethos like Hip-Hop Nation - now entering its 10th year.

The group held its first event of the year in the Pit Wednesday and leaders said they want to focus more on spreading awareness and become more service oriented.

The organization was originally founded by UNC alumnus Kevin Thomas, also known as Kaze, in 1995 and was officially recognized by the University in 1996 during his sophomore year.

"When I came here I noticed that there weren't any organizations that were really representing the interests that I had," said Kaze, noting that he sought to get involved with hip-hop music and production.

"I wasn't the only cat, a couple other individuals, we got together and said we were gonna make a collective called Hip-Hop Nation. It's not only hip-hop, it's also spoken word, DJs, graf writers, break dancing."
