Wrestlers win ACC, earn best finish since 1997

March 5 - North Carolina wrestler Drew Forshey's hour came during the ACC Championship at Mat Jam in UNC-Greensboro's Fleming Gym.

Facing Virginia Tech's Justin Staylor, Forshey manhandled the Hokie, cruising to a 9-2 victory - and becoming the first of four Tar Heels to ascend the podium as UNC took home the team title.

North Carolina finished with 76 points, besting Va. Tech, which finished second with 66.5. The Hokies were the only ACC team UNC failed to beat in the regular season.

"I can't picture it any better," Forshey said. "We worked so hard. This is what we wanted; this is what we worked for."

Forshey was one of two returning Tar Heels from 2003-04's dreadful 5-11 campaign that ended with a fourth-place finish in what was then a five-team ACC.

The nadir of the season came in a home loss to Duke, which had not beaten the Tar Heels since 1973.

"It was real tough," said David Dashiell, who sat out that season with a broken wrist. "Especially when Duke laughed at us, that was the low point of the year."

No. 12 Evan Sola took home his second ACC title in Greensboro, though he faced tough competition in the final round against No. 13 David Hoffman from Va. Tech. Sola scored a tight 6-4 victory that left him visibly exhausted.

But the junior, who was an All-American two years ago before sitting out last season with an ACL injury, was still named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler.

The team's moment in the limelight came as it earned the 16th ACC title in UNC history, capping an incredible comeback season.

"I feel like a million bucks right now," Forshey said.

The four Tar Heel champions - Forshey, Sola, Dashiell and junior Garrett Atkinson A-- headed to St. Louis for the NCAA Championship from March 17 to March 19.

They left with their best finish at nationals since 1997, taking 24th place with 23 points.

Sola was again an All-American, placing sixth nationally at 133 pounds.

His performance was also the best showing by a UNC wrestler since 1997, when Justin Harty was sixth at heavyweight.
