Swimming & diving

Senior Whitney Sprague placed second in the nation in the 1650-yard freestyle and posted the eighth fastest performance in NCAA history her second-straight second-place finish in the NCAA Championships.

Sprague finished with a time of 15:46.57 in her last swim for UNC dropping more than four points off her previous best and beating her own ACC and UNC records in the process.

The nine-member Tar Heel squad finished the meet in 20th place with 41 points.

Fencing

UNC senior Bobby Ziechmann finished 13th overall in the men's sabre competition the best NCAA Championships finish of his career and helped UNC to a tie for 20th place in the team competition.

Ziechmann fell only one spot short of earning All-America honors which go to the top 12 finishers.

Ziechmann's younger brother sophomore Kevin finished in 21st in sabre for UNC.

Penn State won the national title.
