Field Hockey downs Ohio State

Advances to NCAA tournament's second round

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.--The North Carolina field hockey team took the first step toward its goal of a National Championship on Saturday, defeating No. 16 Ohio State 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA field hockey championship.

Senior Dani Forword scored twice, and senior Illse Davids and freshman Kelsey Kolojejchick each tallied a goal for the Tar Heels, who outshot the Buckeyes 14-4 on the afternoon.

The Tar Heels’ victory also serves as a birthday present for UNC coach Karen Shelton, who celebrates her 52nd birthday today.

No.  3 North Carolina (17-2) will face the winner of this afternoon’s matchup between Indiana and Wake Forest at 2 P.M. on Sunday in Winston-Salem.
