The Daily Tar Heel

Rebuking army shameful; it protects citizens’ rights

TO THE EDITOR:

I am appalled at The Daily Tar Heel’s stance on the recent partnership that has emerged between the UNC system and the U.S. Army Special Forces Command (“Discrimination? Don’t ask,” Nov. 17). It is abhorrent that the DTH believes that the Army’s values run counter to those of UNC. Perhaps the DTH’s editorial staff has forgotten that the Army’s constant protection of our constitutional rights is what allows them to publish such nonsense in the first place?

Given the lack of even a single article related to our veterans on Veteran’s Day last week, I’m not surprised that the DTH’s anti-military bias has come through once again.

The men and women of our Army put their lives on the line for all of us, each and every day. Many, including recent UNC alumni, have paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Perhaps the DTH’s editorial staff would prefer to deal with our nation’s adversaries, who not only discriminate against homosexuals but routinely put them to death. Our soldiers are fighting this type of intolerance each and every day, and yet the DTH chooses to bash our military in an editorial.
