UNC-Stanford first half summary

Women's soccer leads 1-0 at half

COLLEGE STATION, TEXAS -- North Carolina leads Stanford 1-0 at halftime of the NCAA National Championship game at Aggie Soccer Stadium.

Jessica McDonald scored her first goal in over a month in the third minute of the match when Casey Nogueira bent a ball into the 18-yard box from about 30 yards out that found McDonald and, subsequently, the back of the net.

UNC has had more opporunities to post a higher score on the board but they have gone begging. That's more than the Tar Heels' opponent can say.

The Cardinal has amassed two shots and only one on goal, which was a weak ball that UNC keeper Ashlyn Harris easily scooped. UNC has tallied 10 shots with two of them on goal. The Tar Heels have also attempted seven corner kicks to Stanford's zero. On the season, UNC holds a 182-60 advantage against its opponents in corner kicks.

The North Carolina defense has successfully held a potent Stanford offense at bay. The Cardinal recorded 80 goals this year and allowed only 14. UNC has allowed only 12 on the year.

UNC is working on its 19th shutout of the season. Stanford entered the match with a perfect 25-0 record.
