In recent years, Facebook has become a way for students to announce their opinions to the world on everything from political parties to six-pack abs.
And during student government elections, Facebook becomes an important forum for organizing, campaigning and building support.
It also has become an unscientific method of tracking the level of student support for candidates, often a fickle thing to gauge before election day.
Each junior running for student body president must gather 1,000 unique signatures by 5 p.m. today to be certified by the Board of Elections and have their name placed on the Feb. 9 ballot.
The Daily Tar Heel has tracked membership in each candidate’s group at noon each day for the past week.
Hogan Medlin’s group immediately gathered almost three times as many members as the others and never fell from first place. Joe Levin-Manning was the only candidate to consistently lose members, and his group has shrunk by a few people almost every day.
