The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

In his letter to the editor “Students paying for many bad decisions with tickets,” (Jan. 25), Tom Hicks, UNC ’78, ended with: “My seats are in the upper deck, along with many of the student seats, but there are two huge differences. I have to pay for my tickets, and I actually show up for every game.”

Hicks’ assertion is incorrect. We do pay for our tickets. The student athletic fee is $265 this academic year. Over four years, each student pays about $1,000 for the privilege of entering the lottery to get basketball tickets along with entry to other sporting events.

Mr. Hicks should be grateful that he has a choice about whether or not he wants to pay for his tickets. We’re forced to pay, whether we want to spend our money on athletic tickets or not.

Myself, I’d rather have $1,000 less in student loans or just buy tickets to the games I wanted to go to.
