The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Whether a student just got back from that semester in Sevilla or is struggling with these newfangled online Spanish courses, an immersive language community is a great way to retain or build fluency.

Luckily, UNC’s housing department now offers such an opportunity to learn outside the classroom here on campus.

The Spanish House Living-Learning Community is an immersion program run by the combined effort of students, the housing department and the Spanish department that will be open to students of all levels of proficiency.

It will emphasize language and cultural learning along with service to the Latino community.

Our 2010-11 community will be housed alongside the Carolina Latino Collaborative, allowing residents to get involved with a variety of student groups and initiatives.

We welcome students to learn more at our open house on Feb. 2 from 7 p.m to 9 p.m. in Craige North Residence Hall. During your visit we would be happy to answer any questions about the application and the experience.

Applications can be found on the housing Web site and are due Feb. 12.

Remember, when it comes to language, reading and writing are only half of the battle.
