The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Students for Students International and the Student Global Health Committee have launched a new Tanzanian Milk Tea that has been added to menus at the Global Cup Café and the Daily Grind until March 5. Proceeds from milk tea sales will go toward an emergency medical fund for S4Si’s young women scholars in Zanzibar, Tanzania.

Many young students in Tanzania are faced with illnesses that prevent them from attending school for a prolonged period of time. Because of gender imbalances, it is especially important for women to stay in school.

However, in a country where the average annual income is $250, most families cannot afford medicine for their daughters, even medicine used to treat common ailments. Fortunately, many of the health conditions keeping scholars out of school can be treated (or prevented) with inexpensive medical assistance.

We need your support to keep this initiative going! We encourage you to substitute your morning coffee with Tanzanian Milk Tea and support the emergency medical fund for our scholars in Zanzibar! To learn more about these organizations, please visit studentorgs.unc.edu/sghc.
