The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Over spring break, Tom Fetzer and the N.C. GOP released a fundraising letter criticizing Gov. Bev Perdue’s record on the parole system in North Carolina.

While political mailings and e-mails often pander to the lowest common denominator, this mailing sank to a new low.

Fetzer opened the letter referencing Eve Carson’s killing two years ago, and the dedication of her memorial garden last week. References to Eve’s death bring up painful memories for students at UNC. It is highly inappropriate, tactless and cruel for Eve’s death to be used as a political ploy.

We should be able to have a reasonable discussion about our state’s criminal justice system. Politicians on both sides should be able to criticize the policies that their opponents support.

However, politicians should not use a tragedy to their advantage by exploiting the death of one of UNC’s most loved students.

Eve’s death should not be used for exploitation and fundraising purposes. Tom Fetzer and the N.C. GOP should apologize for this shameless act of desperation.
