The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Let’s face it: the Honors thesis option is not particularly well understood, and yet the successful composition and defense of a thesis is the only way for UNC students to graduate with Honors or Highest Honors.

While the Honors Program allows students to take challenging courses by virtue of priority registration and a diverse and growing Honors curriculum, one need not be in the Honors Program to write an Honors thesis, and simply being in the Honors Program has nothing to do with graduating with Honors or Highest Honors.

I write, therefore, to invite all students who are interested in pursuing an Honors thesis now or in the future to join us this afternoon at 6 p.m. in Gardner Room 008 for an Honors thesis panel discussion.

We will be joined by Charles Mitchell of the Department of Biology, who will serve as our faculty liaison and adviser for the panel discussion. There will be student representatives from the humanities, social sciences and natural sciences, each of whom will briefly discuss his or her experience with the Honors thesis process and answer questions.
