TO THE EDITOR:
For several years, the National Invitational Tournament has not required that teams finish at or above .500 in order to qualify for a postseason berth. Therefore, the UNC men’s basketball team’s results down the stretch have no direct bearing on their eligibility for the postseason. The last few games will only affect the team’s profile that the NIT’s selection committee will use to seed teams.
On that note, UNC basketball fans should pull for lower profile schools like the Murray State University or Siena College — regular-season champions in their conference who would not make the NCAA tournament if they lost in their conference tournament, but who would earn an automatic invitation to the NIT. We don’t want to push our luck.
