The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

The decision of the Duke College Republicans to impeach chair Justin Robinette, (“Leader of Duke CRs forced out,” April 19), which we understand to be primarily based on his sexual orientation, is absolutely unacceptable. Regardless of other allegations against Justin, it is clear that Duke University’s non-discrimination policy has been violated. We urge Duke administration and student leaders to take swift action to deliver justice for Justin, an outstanding and dedicated student leader.

Let’s remember first and foremost that Justin Robinette is a person. He has the same rights and deserves the same privacy and respect as any other student. This includes deciding for himself when and how to come out, which unfortunately has not been respected by the campus media and some of his peers.

We have the utmost respect for our Republican peers at Duke and UNC and understand that there are many among their ranks who disagree with the recent impeachment decision. But this is one issue where we cannot set aside our differences and agree to disagree. If the allegations are proven true, we urge UNC College Republicans to condemn the actions of their counterpart at Duke University and to ensure that the same situation never occurs at Carolina.
