TO THE EDITOR:
Recently I have noticed a wave of kvetches and numerous comments about the presence of high-school students participating in guided tours here at UNC.
Where I expect to see excitement and welcoming smiles, I witness annoyance. I am, honestly, a bit shocked.
For me, the sight of tour groups around campus brightens up my day, and I am reminded of my excitement for approaching new experiences here. Instead of feeling that my peers agree, I hear under-the-breath comments about how students and parents clog the Student Stores, dining halls and campus in general.
Students say things like “Yeah, I remember when I was their age. Silly kids.” Once again, I am taken aback.
C’mon, Tar Heels. Let’s not get stuck in a rut of higher-education ego. What I would like to experience is an aura of enthusiasm for the new generation of Tar Heels.
After all, our welcome now is a strong first impression of our Carolina community. It is up to us to define, embrace and exhibit all that we love about UNC.
