TO THE EDITOR:

Habitat for Humanity’s “Act! Speak! Build! Week” is a week of promoting advocacy and spreading awareness about Habitat, poverty and substandard housing.

More than 1.6 billion worldwide live in substandard housing. About 95 million in the U.S., one-third of the nation, have housing problems.

In 2009, there were a reported 156 homeless people, including 27 children, in Chapel Hill.

Habitat for Humanity is founded on the ideal that every man, woman and child should have a decent, safe and affordable place to live.

Habitat gives a “hand up” rather than a “hand out” to create stronger communities. UNC’s chapter works closely with Orange County through weekly builds, fundraising, tutoring programs, Boys & Girls Club events and other community outreach programs.

On Tuesday, there will be a letter-writing campaign in Peabody Hall Room 218 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. to spread the word about Habitat for Humanity.

Please bring addresses of friends and family to the event.

On Friday, we will be serving free food and showing a documentary screening of “The Life a House Built” that details Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter’s 25-year involvement with Habitat for Humanity in Student Union Room 3206 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Look for us in the Pit and in front of Wilson Library this week to learn more and show your support.

If you have questions or want to know how to get involved with Habitat, contact h4houtreach@gmail.com or visit http://habitat.unc.edu.
