The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:
Shame on the DTH for running Thursday’s Daily Dose about a drunk British man’s intentionally causing a hamster’s gruesome death. Like all Daily Doses, this was not a local story that had any bearing on the Chapel Hill community. Unlike other Daily Doses, however, this was not funny or amusingly quirky. The DTH could have — and should have — chosen to run a different story.

There is nothing entertaining about the deliberate death of a “beloved” pet. And because the event happened in Britain, there is nothing newsworthy about it for us at and around UNC. Violence to animals is NEVER funny; couching the man’s actions in “drunkenness,” as if to explain his actions, is reprehensible. Let us sincerely hope that such an inane item won’t inspire similarly stupid behavior here. As for the DTH: You need to do better next time.
