The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

It has been 30 years since I graduated from Carolina. I was so privileged to have received my degree there. You who are attending today and starting out a new year are so privileged and blessed to be Carolina students.

We are all living through difficult times and it is so easy to be negative, so we need to encourage one another. Academic endeavors are rigorous, so all need encouragement; you do, your classmates do, and especially your professors, administrators and staff. The two words that are golden to each of them are, “Thank you.” They all work so hard on your behalf! And much of that work you don’t see!

As an alumnus, let me challenge you to do five things each day to encourage each other, the faculty and staff. According to the University there are 28,916 total students. If each student was committed to this each day, it would equal 144,580 daily acts of encouragement, 1,012,060 weekly acts of encouragement and 4,048,240 monthly acts of encouragement. Think of what a difference each of you would make!
