The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

In response to Rochelle Gagg’s letter (“If no mosque allowed, then YMCA should be banned,” Sept. 10) to the editor about banning the YMCA in New York near Ground Zero — the men responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks were not motivated by the fact that they were men. Instead, they were driven by extremist beliefs. This is what has caused the controversy.

Your attacks on the YMCA were also misguided. The YMCA is an inclusive organization that includes both men and women. In fact, many classes offered at YMCAs everywhere are centered toward women’s health.

To make it sound even more inclusive, the YMCA has also started a campaign to rename itself the Y. The use of sarcasm to prove a point in regards to an issue such as this is disturbing, and respect should be given to both the victims of the 9/11 attacks and their families as well as the Islamic community.
