The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

After a lengthy wait, it was finally announced on Monday that Greg Little, Marvin Austin and Robert Quinn are all done playing football for the season.

While this announcement was not particularly surprising to me, the decision to allow the players to keep their scholarships for this year was appalling. These men were brought to this great University for the purpose of representing our football program. Not only have they failed to do that this year, but they failed to do it because of their own poor judgment. It’s not injuries keeping them out of competition this season but illegal and immoral behavior.

Why, then, should they be allowed to go to school for free when they are no longer earning their scholarships?
The decision to allow these three ex-players to retain their scholarships undermines the effort of the rest of our outstanding athletes who earn the money they receive.

It also wastes money that could be used to bring athletes into the program who value and respect the reputation of our university and who truly believe that the name on the fronts of their jerseys are more important than the names on the backs.
