TO THE EDITOR:
In response to Jonathan Jones’ highly opinionated column (“Russell Wilson should not be a celebrated senior,” Nov. 17) about N.C. State honoring quarterback Russell Wilson during their senior day, I only have one question: Who cares? I know the undergraduate population is eagerly hoping for our first victory over the Wolfpack in football since Tom O’Brien became N.C. State’s head coach, but who are we to question the practices of another school honoring a great student athlete?
Given the possibility of Wilson not coming back next year I applaud the N.C. State coaching staff for choosing to proceed with honoring Wilson, who despite just playing three years is second all-time in touchdowns in ACC history, as opposed to risking him not having the same opportunity to be honored that every other senior has.
Say what you want, but college football has been truly blessed to have an outstanding individual like Russell Wilson representing the sport as he completely encapsulates what it means to be a student-athlete.
