The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

The only word I can use to describe the story on Dan Paustian (“UNC student arrested in Wilmington on charges of cocaine, marijuana possession,” Nov. 1) is inappropriate. Yes, he is a UNC student and yes, the student body is entitled to know what is going on in the lives of our peers.

But whereas last year’s cocaine incident involved multiple UNC students that were arrested in our actual vicinity, this occurrence involved solely one student positioned a good two and half hours away from our campus at the time of his arrest. Is this really worthy of the front page?

I’m also highly disappointed in the DTH for not only including the mug shot of a non-UNC student, but also for contacting Paustian’s parents, both of which were highly unnecessary.

If it weren’t for Dan’s Greek affiliation, would this have even made it into the crime blotter?

I find the entirety of these articles distasteful, making the DTH out to be no better than a silly tabloid. Dan Paustian is certainly going through enough in his life right now that he doesn’t need further embarrassment by being recognized across campus, and his family certainly deserves their privacy at a time like this.

I feel like I speak for many when I suggest that you save the front page for something actually relevant to this campus.
