Dr. George Rabinowitz’s death a real loss for UNC

Sunday, I received news that one of my favorite professors, a man who had inspired me to move forward and pursue a degree in political science, had passed away from a heart attack in Norway while doing what he loved — teaching and research. With that, my deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and former students of political science professor Dr. George Rabinowitz.

I had Dr. Rabinowitz for both his POLI 100 and POLI 412 classes, both of which have been two of my favorite classes to this day at UNC. He taught them with excitement, enthusiasm and a sense of humor that I and many others will never forget. From my own experiences as well as hearing what other students and faculty members said about him, Dr. Rabinowitz was a valued and loved professor among students and his colleagues.

He inspired me to make the decision to write an honors thesis in political science and when I asked him last semester if he would advise me in the process of doing so next year, he gladly said yes. His passing is an incredible personal and academic loss to me, as I am sure it is to many other students whose lives have been touched by him.

His loss to the university and its student body is an enormous one indeed and I know I will never forget him. Thank you, Dr. Rabinowitz, for everything you did for me, for your students and for Carolina. You will be missed.
