The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

It is often said, especially on campus, that we need regulations to help keep big business in check, so that it can’t exploit the little guy.

But unfortunately, the power of big business is often so pervasive that it uses government regulations to keep the little guy out of competition.

This is called “regulatory capture,” and it happens all the time.

Big business uses its resources to lobby the government and pass regulations that add costs to business, usually the cost of hiring lawyers to help comply with the regulations. These costs are easy for the corporate giants to swallow, but are prohibitive to smaller businesses that can’t afford them.

If you’d like to learn more about how established businesses use the law to crush competition — and how the courts can help — come to Hanes Hall, Room 107 this Thursday, April 14 at 3:30 p.m. to hear a lecture by Robert McNamara, staff attorney with the Institute for Justice.

His opinions have appeared in media such as Air America, Fox News, and The Wall Street Journal. For more info, and to RSVP, please go to www.tinyurl.com/uncij
