The Daily Tar Heel

TO THE EDITOR:

Yesterday we saw an outpouring of support for freshman Quinn Matney and other victims of similar hate crimes in light of the freshman’s alleged attack. The response was truly inspiring and reflected the atmosphere of collective strength and inclusion found at UNC.

While police have made a declaration saying that the event did not happen, students now have a responsibility to react to such news in an appropriate way that reflects some of the ideals of our university: acceptance, critique, and tact.

It is clear that no one seems to know what actually happened. However, whether or not it is true that the account of the assault was fabricated, we do know that the injury to Quinn and our sense of mutual trust is real, and this should not be taken lightly. There are forces that led these injuries to be inflicted — forces that run deeper than a desire for publicity. As students, we should work against such forces that lead to isolation, confusion and discrimination.
