TO THE EDITOR:
When you sit down for a meal today, think about the farm workers who labored in the North Carolina fields so that you could eat that delicious meal. If you worry about pesticides on your food, think of those who suffer from pesticide poisoning from picking the food you enjoy.
Farm work is the third most dangerous job in the country, yet it lacks some of the most basic labor protections, especially in regards to child labor, and has some of the lowest wages. North Carolina is the largest sweet potato producer in the country; a farm worker must pick two tons (4,000 pounds) of sweet potatoes to make $50.
Though we are all part of the problem, we can all be part of the solution.
