After a disappointing 12th place finish in its last event, the North Carolina men’s golf team will be taking aim at revenge and flag sticks in Kannapolis this weekend at the Irish Creek Collegiate.
UNC’s 12th place performance at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate didn’t jive with how the Tar Heels played in the final two rounds, posting the fourth-best team score in each of those rounds. But as a team they could not overcome their horrendous first-round total of 22-over-par.
UNC coach John Inman knows his team is better than that poor first-round total and thinks that all his team needs is a little consistency.
“I think the guys have been playing some good rounds of golf; they just haven’t put three of them together,” he said. “So I think that’s something that’s kind of our focus this week.”
But consistency alone will not bring success to the Tar Heels. The team has spent the week fine-tuning its swings for weekend action.
“We’ve been working on our short game and putting especially,” Inman said. “We’ve been basically preparing our short game, playing rounds of golf — making sure we stay sharp.”
Inman complimented his team’s ball striking in spite of the windy conditions his team has been forced to battle early this spring. The weather forecast for this weekend looks clear, but the Tar Heels will have plenty of other obstacles.
The Club at Irish Creek’s 7,099 yard, par-71 course will host 13 teams this weekend including two ACC teams in the top 25 — Duke and Wake Forest.
The Tar Heels will be looking for senior Henry Zaytoun III to continue his hot streak. It was on the back of his consecutive rounds of 69 that UNC surged out of last place at Bulls Bay.
