UNC football program loses three players

Furr, Willis, Jackson to transfer

The North Carolina football program has been all over the national radar during the offseason with a pending NCAA violation and the firing of former head coach Butch Davis.

But the Tar Heels haven’t cleared all the necessary hurdles to get the season under way just yet, as three players have decided to take their talents elsewhere.

Just days before practice began and shortly after Davis was let go, junior running back Hunter Furr asked for his release to transfer. Reports say Furr will play for East Carolina after sitting out a year.

The departure takes another body out of a backfield that needed extra players last season, but it more importantly takes away experience.

“It just makes us a little bit younger,” running back Ryan Houston said.

“We got a little bit of experience in the games but since Hunter left I’m really the only running back left with any game experience. It’s kind of, I don’t want to say put pressure on me, but for my sake I’ve got to be a more vocal and verbal leader to the younger backs and just teach them how the offense works.”

Despite the timing of Furr’s decision, it’s not something Houston has time to take personally.

“It kind of drops us off a little bit, but we’re going in to the mindset that we just have to keep moving forward,” Houston said.

“There’s nothing we can do to get the players back or anything to cope with it but to just keep going forward with our program.”

But issues with depth due to departing players aren’t limited to the offense.

Interim head coach Everett Withers announced Aug. 8 that sophomore defensive tackle Brandon Willis, who hasn’t played a down of college football, was transferring from North Carolina a second time. He joined the Tar Heels in January 2010 before transferring to UCLA in August 2010.

In May 2011, Willis transferred back to UNC and began taking summer classes.

Junior cornerback Mywan Jackson also asked for his release this summer. Jackson played in 10 of 13 games during the 2010 season and registered 20 tackles.

Harrelson played the defensive back position in high school and has started the process of relearning his old position for this season.

“We’ve been talking about moving Todd over there for nearly a year and a half, two years, so to move him over now is easy,” Withers said. “He was an All-State corner in high school and he looks pretty natural over there to me.”

Withers asked Harrelson about making the switch Wednesday night after practice, and the junior was immediately on board.

“I did it for the team, I felt like I could contribute,” Harrelson said. “If it’s for us to win then I’ll do it and I know that with injuries and the depth at corner I wanted to help. So I made the move. It wasn’t that bad.”
