Five Tar Heels taken in MLB Draft

The Major League Baseball Draft wrapped up Wednesday June 6 and in the three day event five members of the North Carolina baseball team were selected.

Senior catcher Jacob Stallings was the first to go as he went to the Pittsburgh Pirates in the seventh round as the 226th overall selection.

The Los Angeles Angels picked All-American right-handed closer Michael Morin in the 13th round with the 417th pick.

Two Tar Heels went in the 16th round as RHP Cody Penny and second baseman Tommy Coyle went to the Cleveland Indians and the Tampa Bay Rays respectively.

Key relief pitcher R.C. Orlan was selected in the 30th round by the Washington Nationals.

Four Tar Heel recruits were also selected in the draft led by left-handed pitcher Matt Smoral who was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays 50th overall in the supplemental first round.

Shortstop Landon Lassiter was picked by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 16th round. Skye Bolt, a centerfielder was drafted in the 26th round by the Nationals and Korey Dunbar, a catcher, went to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 39th round.

Players have until July 13th to sign with their MLB clubs. Players that don’t sign can resume their eligibility at North Carolina
