In a closely contested election, Andrew Powell won the office of the 2014-2015 student body president of UNC-Chapel Hill. Powell defeated Emilio Vicente in a record-breaking runoff election Tuesday night. Powell won 62.9 percent majority with 4,760 of 7,441 student votes.

Andrew Powell won the race for student body president Tuesday night, beating out Emilio Vicente to obtain 62.9 percent of the vote.

UNC Out of State Student Association, Dialectic and Philanthropic Societies, the Residence Hall Association and College Republicans all endorsed Powell for the position. The Daily Tar Heel’s editorial board also endorsed Powell after he entered the runoff election.

Powell’s campaign has centered on education reform in the classroom, specifically with “flipping classrooms.”

Powell will assume the role of student body president in April when current president Christy Lambden steps down.
