Letter: Rejection is tough, even for Admissions

TO THE EDITOR:

Regarding “Prestige and percents: Does UNC recruit students to deny students?

This question has a simple answer — No, we do not.

We recruit students because UNC is a great school and we think students deserve to know about it.

We recruit students because we want to help students decide whether UNC would be a good place for them.

We recruit students because we want to enroll students who will make each other better.

For all these reasons, we recruit students by sharing the stories of current students: their brilliance and their backgrounds; their kindness and their commitments; their differences and their drive to make a difference.

We read every application of the students we’ve recruited, and we try to see the best in each of them. When we have to disappoint them, we say we’re sorry and we mean it, and we try to help them find their way forward.

We know that applying to UNC can be stressful for students and those who love them. We do our best to care for students in what can be a difficult moment, and at all times to honor their dignity.
