Here's your North Carolina athletics preview for the week ending on Oct. 28

Erin Matson (#1) takes a shot at Duke's goal during the game on Sunday, Oct. 21 2018. Matson scored the second goal of the game, helping the Tar Heels to their 5-2 victory over DUke.

Featuring a regular season finale, the South’s oldest football rivalry, ACC Tournament play, a season opener and the first home swimming and diving meet, this weekend is jam-packed with intrigue for North Carolina athletics.

Here’s a look at what’s happening this weekend for Tar Heel programs:

Volleyball

The North Carolina volleyball team completes its four-game road trip with matches at Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday and Clemson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Head coach Joe Sagula’s squad has not won a set since Oct. 7 at Florida State, but that has a chance to change against two teams that are 2-8 in conference matches.

The Tar Heels split the season series against the Yellow Jackets in 2017 and swept the Tigers in two games, adding hope for positive results on the road.

Women’s Golf

Fresh off a seventh-place finish in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational, the women’s golf squad heads to Wilmington, N.C. to compete in the Landfall Tradition.

The last time UNC competed in this particular event in 2016, the squad finished in 14th place. This year, five other ACC squads will join North Carolina in the competition.

Swimming and Diving

Head coach Rich DeSelm’s squad swam its way to a victory over East Carolina on Oct. 5 in Greenville, N.C., but have not competed since.

On Friday, the team hosts its first and only home event of the fall portion of the season with South Carolina visiting Koury Natatorium. Last season, the Tar Heel women defeated the Gamecocks on the road, but the men lost, 168-132.

Cross Country

On Friday, the UNC cross country team competes in the ACC Cross Country Championships in Jamaica Plain, Mass. Last season, both the Tar Heel men and women finished 11th out of 15 teams at the event.

Fencing

The North Carolina fencing team begins its regular season with a trip to Philadelphia to compete in the Temple Open, beginning on Saturday at 8 a.m. Last season, three Tar Heels received bronze medals in the opening event, including then-sophomore Carlexa Fevry.

Football

The South’s oldest football rivalry continues on Saturday with two programs heading in different directions. The Tar Heels are hoping to salvage their season after a 1-5 start. Meanwhile, Virginia wants to keep its ACC Coastal Division title hopes alive, boasting a 5-2 mark and a 3-1 conference clip.

Field Hockey

The No. 1 team in the nation closes the book on an impressive regular season with a road match against No. 25 Old Dominion on Sunday at noon. With a victory, the team will complete an unblemished 17-0 campaign as it looks to return to a 10th straight Final Four.

Fresh off a fourth-place finish in the Head of the Charles Regatta, the women's rowing team faces off in the Princeton Chase on Sunday. Last season, the Tar Heels' top varsity boat finished in 26th place in the competition.
