Then sophomore Fiona Crawley looks to return a volley during her singles match versus Boston College on Sunday, March 20, 2022.

The No.1 North Carolina women’s tennis team (19-0, 8-0 ACC) defeated the Florida State Seminoles (9-8-0, 3-6-0 ACC) 5-2 on the road Sunday afternoon to continue their unbeaten season.

What happened?

The Tar Heels started off strong, winning the doubles point thanks to the two strong partnerships. The No. 1 doubles partnership in the NCAA featuring sophomore Fiona Crawley and junior Elizabeth Scotty continued its dominance with a 6-3 win over the Florida State match-up. Senior duo Cameron Morra and Alle Sanford also won their doubles match by a score of 6-2.

Going into singles, Florida State forfeited on courts five and six, giving the Tar Heels a 3-0 lead. No. 34 Fiona Crawley was the next to finish winning with sets of 6-2 and 6-1. Florida State No. 15 then posted the Seminoles’ first point of the match with a victory over No. 12 Morra.

No. 34 Anika Yarlagadda came back for the Tar Heels to post a point after winning 6-3 and 6-3 in two sets. FSU’s Anna Arkadianou defeated No. 10 Reilly Tran in the last singles match to finish, but the Tar Heels remained on top with a final score of 5-2.

Who stood out?

Crawley stood out in the match as she helped add two points for the Tar Heels. First, she scored in doubles alongside her partner Scotty as they continued their dominance as a duo. She also put another crucial point on the board early following the two forfeit matches as she quickly defeated her FSU opponent in singles.

When was it decided?

Despite two losses in singles, the match was decided early on due to strong doubles play and two FSU forfeits. The Tar Heels had a 3-0 lead before the first singles match concluded.

Why does it matter?

The Tar Heels have had nothing short of a perfect season, but their flawless record will be more contested over the next few weeks and into the postseason. North Carolina is the team to beat in NCAA women’s tennis and opponents will undoubtedly prepare carefully to take on this team.

UNC must remain focused, keeping the long-term goals of the season in perspective. The next few weeks leading up to the ACC tournament beginning Wednesday, April 20th will be nothing short of challenging. The Tar Heels will face key opponents including No.23 Wake Forest and No. 2 N.C. State. The last regular-season match will be played close to home in Durham against the rival No.10 Duke Blue Devils.

What’s more? All of these teams will be competing in the ACC conference tournaments and all vying to beat the current No.1, North Carolina. UNC must build off of wins like these while staying laser-focused on the postseason.

When do they play next?

The Tar Heels will travel in-state on Friday as they play No. 23 Wake Forest at 5 p.m. and look to continue their winning streak. Next weekend will conclude with a crucial match-up against No.2 N.C. State away in Raleigh at 2 p.m.
