Company Carolina cancels production of "Once on This Island"

In preparation of our weekly Wednesday Roundup of local arts happenings, Canvas regularly checks the homepages of campus and community arts organizations — places like theatre groups, museums and the Carolina Performing Arts series. We find out show times and concert updates and all those related good things for the roundup.

So it much to our surprise when we clicked on UNC student theatre group Company Carolina’s homepage and came across this message:

ONCE ON THIS ISLAND HAS BEEN CANCELED due to the production’s loss of a lead and the music director.”

Company Carolina’s production of “Once On This Island,” a tropical musical of doomed love and meddlesome deities, was supposed to open the group’s 2010-2011 season. It was set to premiere Friday in the Forest Theatre.

But, due to some as of yet unknown difficulty, the production will no longer take place.

This last-minute cancellation is the second in recent months for the Company, whose spring 2010 production of the musical “Cats” was unexpectedly canceled the week of the planned opening.

Canvas is trying to get in touch with Company Carolina directors and actors for more information, and will post updates as we learn more about this cancellation.
