'No days off'

As the time commitment required of student-athletes has drastically shifted over the years, it's been harder for them to do much else outside of their respective sport.

'A unique opportunity'

Identical twins Tucker and Walker Hume have always been together. But in two seasons on the North Carolina men's soccer team, they haven't played a single game together. Despite this, the brothers have still found gratification in each other's success.

Get to know Shakeel Rashad 

Through five games this season, North Carolina linebacker Shakeel Rashad is third on the team with 31 total tackles. With the Tar Heels on their bye, the senior joined Senior Writer Carlos Collazo and Sports Editor Pat James on this week's DTH Sports podcast.

Gnonkonde proves his worth

North Carolina defensive end Junior Gnonkonde intended on going to Georgia Tech before he lost his scholarship because of low test scores. And in UNC's win over the Yellow Jackets this past Saturday, he proved he is not a player who should be given up on.

  • The North Carolina field hockey team hosts Longwood at 5 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina volleyball team hosts Virginia at 6 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina softball team hosts an exhibition against Elon at 7 p.m. on Friday before hosting an exhibition against Georgia at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina men's tennis team opens play in the Fairfield Challenger in Fairfield, California, on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina swimming and diving team travels to Athens, Georgia, to compete against Georgia at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina women's lacrosse team travels to Baltimore to play an exhibition against Johns Hopkins at 3 p.m. on Saturday before playing against Loyola at noon on Sunday.
  • The North Carolina rowing team competes in the Occoquan Chase in Occoquan, Virginia, on Sunday.
  • The No. 1 North Carolina women's soccer team visits No. 2 Florida State at noon on Sunday.
