An oft-forgotten rivalry

The North Carolina football team's game against Virginia on Saturday marks the 120th meeting between the programs, which will tie them for the second-longest series in NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision history. But despite playing each other for such an extended period of time, many people don't know about the "Oldest Rivalry in the South."

'Becoming one person'

When North Carolina setter Abigail Curry arrived at UNC as a freshman, Jordyn Schnabl, then a sophomore, had already established herself at the position. Both staked their claim for the starting job, but they later realized they could help the team the most by working together.

Newfield leads UNC to crucial victory

Early in Thursday's game against Notre Dame, North Carolina forward Alexa Newfield exited the game due to a knee injury. The sixth-year senior has suffered multiple knee injuries during her career, but like she's done every time, she bounced back on Thursday to help lead the women's soccer team to a 2-1 win.

Malik Simmons bides his time

North Carolina cornerback Malik Simmons missed the first two games of the season due to a suspension, and upon returning to the team saw a diminished role on defense. But the senior refused to stop working hard, and in Saturday's win over Wake Forest, his preparation paid off.

  • The North Carolina men's soccer team hosts Louisville at 5 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina volleyball team plays at Georgia Tech at 7 p.m. on Friday before traveling to Clemson to play the Tigers at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
  • The North Carolina men's basketball team celebrates the tipoff of the 2015-16 season at Late Night with Roy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina women's lacrosse team travels to Durham to scrimmage Duke, Michigan and Florida in the Duke Fall Tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina football team hosts Virginia at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina men's golf team opens play in the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate in Greensboro starting on Sunday.
  • The North Carolina women's soccer team hosts Clemson at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
