Football side

Over the past few seasons, the North Carolina football team has come out on the wrong side of several nationally televised games. On Thursday night against Pittsburgh, the Tar Heels bucked this trend.

The other man behind the dynasty

Assistant coach Bill Palladino has spent the past 36 years coaching the North Carolina women's soccer team together with Hall of Fame coach Anson Dorrance. He and Dorrance have led the Tar Heels to 22 national championships and have become fast friends in the process.

Finding a home away from home

First-year midfielder Eva van't Hoog has made an impact as one of three first-year starters for the No. 3 North Carolina field hockey team. But she's adapting to going to school more than 4,000 miles away from her home in the Netherlands.

Looking ahead

  • The North Carolina men's soccer team will travel to face Virginia in the regular season finale with a chance to lock up the top spot in the ACC at 7 p.m. Friday.  
  • The North Carolina women's soccer team will also play its last regular season game in Coral Gables against Miami at 7 p.m. Saturday.  
  • The North Carolina volleyball team will play at home against Louisville at 6 p.m. Friday, then again at 1 p.m. Sunday against Notre Dame.  
  • The North Carolina field hockey team will play Old Dominion at 1 p.m. Sunday.  
  • The North Carolina swimming and diving team will travel to Indiana for a meet against Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee starting at 2 p.m. Then the team will come back to Chapel Hill at 11 a.m. Sunday for the UNC/NCAC Mile Meet. 
  • The North Carolina cross country team will compete in the ACC championships in Tallahassee, Fla., starting at 9 a.m.  
  • The North Carolina men's tennis team will compete in the Charlottesville Challenger in Charlottesville, Va., all day Saturday.  
  • The fencing team will travel to Philadelphia this weekend for the Temple Open.  The women will compete all day Saturday, while the men will compete all day Sunday.  
  • The North Carolina women's lacrosse team will play its first two exhibitions of the season in Chapel Hill this Saturday. The first will be at 10:30 a.m. against Jacksonville, the second will be an alumnae team scrimmage at 1 p.m.
