'The ability to go small can save us'

North Carolina men's basketball coach Roy Williams has long stuck to the traditional notion of a starting lineup. But during Saturday's 85-66 win over Providence, the UNC coach turned to a smaller set to gain a competitive edge.

It worked — and in the Tar Heels' Sweet 16 showdown with Indiana on Friday, it could be the key to victory.

Who holds the edge?

When the top-seeded Tar Heels take on the No. 5 seed Hoosier squad on Friday, the two teams will boast prolific offenses with drastically different approaches.

Yet with so many core contributors on the court, every positional matchup could prove crucial to the final outcome.

Lynch leads softball in dominant display over Chanticleers

With a four-run cushion from the first inning, North Carolina pitcher Kendra Lynch shut down Coastal Carolina's batters throughout the contest.

But it was the junior's hitting prowess that put the Chanticleers away.

  • The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team will compete in the NCAA Men's Swimming Championships in Atlanta from Wednesday to Saturday.
  • The North Carolina fencing team will compete in the NCAA Championships in Waltham, Mass. all day from Thursday to Sunday.
  • The North Carolina women's tennis team travels to Syracuse, where it will take on the Orange at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
  • The North Carolina baseball team will host Georgia Tech for a three-game series from Thursday to Saturday.
  • The North Carolina track and field team will compete in the Raleigh Relays all day on Friday and Saturday.
  • The North Carolina rowing team will compete against Old Dominion, Georgetown and West Virginia in Raleigh on Friday.
  • The North Carolina men's tennis team will host Clemson at 3 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina softball team will host Florida State at 6 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina men's basketball team will face Indiana in the Sweet 16 in Philadelphia at 9:57 p.m. on Friday.
  • The North Carolina volleyball team with play a spring match at Georgia Tech at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina women's lacrosse team will travel to Boston College at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
  • The North Carolina men's lacrosse team will travel to Maryland at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
