Harvey outdueled against Georgia Tech

North Carolina ace Matt Harvey pitched another gem on Friday night against Georgia Tech.

But Deck McGuire was just a little better for the Yellow Jackets.

Georgia Tech took the opening game of the weekend series 2-1, with McGuire going 6 2/3 innings, striking out nine Tar Heels and allowing one run.

Harvey went a full seven innings, striking out 11 and giving up only three hits and one earned run. He exited the game with the Tar Heels down 2-1.

Mike Cavasinni put UNC on the board in the second inning when he singled Tommy Coyle in from second. Coyle had singled and stolen second to get into scoring position.

Ga. Tech wouldn't get a run until the fifth inning. A bunt broke up Harvey's no-hitter after 4 1/3 innings of work. Thomas Nichols scored from second after an error by Coyle at second base.

Harvey walked in a run in the seventh with the bases loaded, giving the Yellow Jackets the one-run edge.

Georgia Tech staved off a late UNC rally in the ninth when the Tar Heels had two on with no outs and then with the bases loaded and one out.

UNC will host Ga. Tech on Saturday at Boshamer at 6 p.m.
