Former UNC soccer player Mia Hamm spoke at Thursday night’s women’s soccer game against Duke.

North Carolina women’s soccer legend Mia Hamm was back at Fetzer Field for Thursday night’s matchup against Duke, urging fans at halftime to join the bone marrow registry.

Hamm said that fans could head to Carmichael Arena anytime before 9:30 p.m. Thursday to register.

Her speech was part of Mia Hamm Foundation Night. The foundation’s mission is to raise awareness for those needing marrow or cord blood transplants.

Hamm said that at the same event last year, 150 people signed up to join the bone marrow registry — a cause that is close to her heart.

“My brother passed away from complications during a bone marrow transplant, and we searched far and wide for a match,” Hamm said. “And there’s someone here in this crowd that could’ve been his savior or someone else’s savior.

“So if you have time … stop by and make a difference.”
