UNC defeats St. Mary's to earn College Cup bid

This one makes four.

With a 2-0 win against St. Mary’s (Calif.), the North Carolina men’s soccer team punched it’s ticket to a fourth consecutive College Cup.

It was Matt Hedges that broke the scoreless tie with a header in the 53rd minute. Kirk Urso had tried to hit Hedges on the first corner attempt but the UNC shot was deflected out for another corner.

This time Hedges made the most of it and guided the ball into the left corner of the net.

Ben Speas doubled that advantage 12 minutes later when he broke free in the box and beat St. Mary’s keeper Doug Herrick one-on-one.

Though the two teams were scoreless at the half, the Tar Heels were the better team the whole way. After outshooting the Gaels 4-3 in the first half, UNC went on to tally 11 more shots in the second half.

The two-goal win is North Carolina’s biggest margin of victory so far in this NCAA tournament as each of the first two games were one-goal games.

The Tar Heels will play UCLA on the first day of the College Cup, Friday, at Regions Park in Hoover, Ala.
