Chapel Hill Regional breakdown

The North Carolina baseball team is hosting a regional again in 2012 starting Friday, June 1.

Joining the Tar Heels in competition for a spot in the Super Regional will be East Carolina, St. John’s and Cornell. Here’s what you need to know.

The Tar Heels are the No. 1 Seed.

No. 2 Seed

Top Pitcher: Kevin Brandt (7-6, 1.85 ERA).

Dating back to 1964, the Tar Heels and East Carolina have meet in the post season seven times including a super regional match up in 2009. UNC has won six of those games, the only loss coming in 1982, a 1-0 game.

The last and only time UNC played St. John’s in the postseason was in the 1978 College World Series. UNC won that game 9-5 and current UNC coach Mike Fox was a member of that team.

Cornell has been in the NCAA tournament just once before and that was in 1977. The Big Red was eliminated that year by St. John’s.
