Tar Heels earn sixth national seed

The NCAA selection committee announced the 64-team field for the 2012 NCAA baseball tournament earlier today and North Carolina received one of eight national seeds.

UNC was pegged as the six seed and will host Cornell, St. John’s and East Carolina in the regional starting Friday, June 1.

The winner of the Chapel Hill regional will play the winner of the Tucson regional in the Super Regional the following weekend. The Tucson regional consists of Arizona, Missouri, New Mexico State and Louisville.

N.C. State will also host a regional and it will include Vanderbilt, UNC-Wilmington and Sacred Heart.

Since 2006 the Tar Heels are undefeated in regional play at home and have won six of the seven post season meetings with ECU.

The Regional round is a double-elimination format. East Carolina and St. John’s play at 1 p.m. Friday and the Tar Heels will open up with Cornell at 6 p.m. On Saturday the losers will play at 1 p.m. and the winners will play at 6 p.m.

The regional final will be Sunday at 6 p.m. or Monday if an extra game is necessary.
