North Carolina football leads Boston College at the half

At the half, the North Carolina football team (1-5, 0-3 ACC) leads Boston College (3-3, 1-2 ACC) 20-7 here at Kenan Stadium.

The Tar Heels found the scoreboard quickly — just less than three minutes into the game — when redshirt senior quarterback Bryn Renner connected with freshman wide receiver Ryan Switzer on a 13-yard pass. It was Switzer’s first touchdown of his career and put UNC ahead 6-0.

But a bad snap just moments later from the Tar Heels turned into a failed extra point attempt and Boston College took control of the ball.

The Eagles only scored once in the first half. In Boston College’s third drive of the game — after North Carolina punter Tommy Hibbard registered a 76-yard punt, the sixth longest in school history — running back Andre Williams came up with a 56-yard touchdown run. It was the longest run from scrimmage for the Eagles this season and kicker Nate Freese’s extra point attempt was good. The Eagles took a 7-6 lead with 7:04 remaining in the half.

But they quickly relinquished that lead as UNC took command of the ball — utilizing its dual quarterback scheme — to tally two more touchdowns. After backup quarterback Marquise Williams — who leads UNC in rushing yards with 40 — was hit hard to open the second quarter, he came up with a 23-yard run to put UNC on the two-yard line. Redshirt senior tailback A.J. Blue picked up two individual one-yard runs and scored with 13:35 left in the half. Thomas Moore’s extra kick was good, making it a 13-7 lead.

UNC capped off the half with a last minute touchdown pass from Renner to freshman wide receiver Bug Howard. Junior tight end Eric Ebron and freshman tailback T.J. Logan catalyzed the play with six and 37-yard runs, respectively. After the touchdown catch, Boston College’s Sean Sylvia drew a flag for a helmet-to-helmet hit, and was immediately disqualified from the game.

Renner has thrown for 153 yards, while Marquise Williams has thrown for 22 and rushed for 40. Boston College running back Andre Williams leads all rushers with 127 yards at the half.

UNC won the coin toss at the beginning of the game and elected to defer to the second half. The Tar Heels will start the third quarter with the ball.
